There is not much contemporary evidence about the two caravels, apart from the few oblique references that can be found in a summary of Columbus' diary. However, two things are fairly certain: both ships belonged to the Pinzon family and both initially had lateen sails. During its first stay in the Canary Islands, the Pinta replaced its lateen sails with square sails. This operation and the replacement of the mast delayed the departure by four weeks. Columbus always referred to Niña and Pinta as caravels. Length built: 45 cm.
